Oh dear.....where to start. I booked lunch for four using a Groupon which I think is a fairly long running promotional tool this establishment is using. Wow! What a fantastic building. On arrival, the entrance and stairs are just stunning, this is a historically important building but when you get to the restaurant, it's a disappointment. The dcor is old and tired and the room was actually very cold. I wanted to keep my coat on! My mum ordered a gin and tonic and my dad a pint of boddingtons. The waitress then informed us there was no tonic water. No tonic water! On a Sunday lunchtime in a hotel restaurant..my dad then tasted his beer and it was off. Whether the beer was bad or the pipes hadn't been cleaned I don't know, but either way it was off. He tried another pint but that was the same. We all ended up with tap water. We ordered from a 1970's basic menu, soup, pate or melon to start. We all had soup which was dry soup mix made up, but the roll was warm and fresh. Next 3 of us had beef and 1 had pork. I've attached a photo of my beef.....it wasn't good. It had been reheated in a microwave to within an inch of it's life. The veg was frozen not fresh, the potatoes had gone through the fryer and the Yorkshire pudding, whilst home made was burnt fairly badly. Dessert was 1 cheese cake, and 3 crumble and custard. Cheesecake was ok, standard bought in type, but even the crumble was bought in, and mine was raw in the middle.All in all a pretty dire experience. All fixable though which is the shame about a place like this. Good management, a proper chef and minimal investment and this could be a wonderful experience.
The staff are n8ce and friendly but the hotel is very dated. My shower only came out as scalding and not a lot of water, I found it easier to have a bath. Also the tv is so old half of the freeview channels won't come up.
Great location in the town. Shame it's a little run down needs a cash injection from the owner.Very clean bedding and towels.Helpful and friendly staff.Full English breakfast, good selection.Good value for money
Very nice and old building to look at. My room though wasn't at all what i was expecting. Very small room. Tv not working. They were some engines somewhere that have been running all night leading to a almost no sleep night. Bathroom does look old and needs obvious repairs. Wanted to have a relaxing bath, but seen the bathtub conditions I just thought I'll have one back home. Disappointing staying but location is just perfect.
My husband and I stayed here for one night. The hotel it's self is great. Great food and drink. The room was beautiful.very old building and had original beams behind glass panels. The only downside is that it is in the town centre so very loud at night time with drinkers which obviously the hotel can't help so I wouldn't recommend if you wanted an unbroken nights sleep. The breakfast that was included tastes great. Good selection of foods. And best of all we were allowed to take our dog with us to stay the night for just 10 extra. Overall a good stay!
